In Uganda, intimate partner violence affects almost half of the population. In July 2023, I had the privilege to travel to Uganda with a team of Emotionally Focused Therapists to bring EFT to the people of Uganda by training local therapists, visiting local facilities and universities, and providing a couples workshop.
We started our week with the four-day externship, the first level of training for therapists learning Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). We had close to 90 therapists in attendance, with some of them traveling from Kenya to attend. The therapists described the training as healing and transformative.
We then visited Tranquil Homes, an inpatient facility for drug and alcohol treatment. We met with several of the residents there as well as provided case consultation to some of the therapists. We went on to visit the Counseling and Guidance Center at Makerere University where we provided case consultation to several psychology students.
The final part of our trip was providing a two-day couples workshop for about 30 couples at a retreat center. The couples learned about attachment and relationship skills and then participated in dialogues as a couple. As we sat in a large group circle at the end, couples described their experience of the workshop as healing, connecting, and working toward generational change.

In March 2019, I had the opportunity to travel with a team to China to work with Chinese locals as well as expats on topics related to trauma, self-care, attachment, and healthy relationships. I was privileged to lead a seminar on the effects of trauma and the importance of self-care, a workshop on attachment in the workplace and in families, and a couples retreat that focused on understanding negative patterns and fostering connection.
